Microdermabrasion and Chemical Peels

While no one has discovered the elusive and long-sought fountain of youth, science has made progress in helping us look better and feel younger with a wide variety of remedies, potions, non-surgical procedures and anti-aging treatments. Two of the most popular choices are chemical peels and microdermabrasion. Both options can offer good results without invasive surgeries or long-lasting side effects.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is useful in treating dull and leathery skin, reducing mild acne scaring, smoothing fine wrinkles, evening skin tone and exfoliating plugged pores. Microdermabrasion stimulates the production of skin cells and collagen which gives the skin its youthful appearance. The results may be subtle, but it is a good alternative for people with skin sensitive to chemical peels. Microdermabrasion is, essentially, skin polishing where the superficial layer of skin is gently abraded away giving an overall fresh healthy glow.

Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels are used to smooth rough dry skin, improve the texture of sun damaged skin and superficial acne scars, minimize fine lines and soften deep wrinkles. Chemical peels are cosmetic as well as therapeutic, also used to treat melasma (dark pigmentation on the face during pregnancy) and pre-cancerous conditions such as keratoses. A series of peels at intervals of two to four weeks is usually required to obtain the best results. The initial peel is often milder and gradually increases with subsequent chemical peel treatments. For the first few days you will notice redness followed by scaling and flaking. Sun avoidance is a must during the peeling process and sunscreen with an SPF 30 should be worn one to two weeks following the peel.
